Staying in Paris close to the Opera Garnier

The Hotel Daunou Opera is ideally situated in one of the most prestigious parts of the capital, a district highly regarded by Parisians and visitors alike. Located in the heart of the second arrondissement, we enjoy the close proximity of such essential aspects of Parisian heritage as the Louvre Museum, the Palais Royal, the Church of the Madeleine and, of course, the Opera Garnier. We are also near to the Grands Magasins; the iconic department stores of the capital, so you can combine culture, entertainment and shopping in one fabulous Parisian getaway.

The Opera Garnier, a cornerstone of Parisian heritage

Could there possibly be a more glamorous setting for a cultural experience than the theatre Garnier? This opulent Second Empire era masterpiece was built for Napoleon III and its façade is adorned with a dazzling array of superb sculptures. It was instantly hailed as a work of art following its completion, although the frank sensuality of ornamentation such as The Dance by Carpeaux unleashed criticism. In 1964, nearly a century after its public opening, the Opera was graced with a sumptuous ceiling painting by the French-Russian artist Marc Chagall. Even today, attending a ballet or opera in this magnificent setting offers the opportunity to enjoy two complementary shows, the one on stage and the one overhead, with its sumptuous colours and dreamlike style.

An evening of ballet with Giselle

From May 27th to June 14th, 2016, the Opera Garnier presents Giselle, a work generally considered to be the greatest of all romantic ballets. First performed in 1841, it has music by Adolphe Adam, choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, and a libretto by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Théophile Gautier. The story concerns the passionate love of a young peasant girl, Giselle, for Duke Albrecht of Silesia, who is betrothed to another. Heratbroken, Giselle dances until she dies. The ghosts of maidens betrayed by their lovers, led by Queen Myrtha, seek vengeance on Albrecht, but he is spared due to an unexpected intervention. This deeply moving drama will ensure that your evening at the Opera Garnier is truly unforgettable.

Strolling in the centre of Paris

It’s just a short stroll from the Hotel Daunou Opera to the Grands Boulevards, where you can find a wealth of famous theatres such as the Grand Rex, as well as the Galeries Lafayette and Printemps Haussmann department stores. To enjoy a magnificent view of Paris, make your way to the small restaurant situated on the top floor of Printemps Homme. After shopping, why not relax with a stroll through the gardens of the Palais Royal to see the Colonnes de Buren art installation, and a visit to the Tuileries before concluding with a tour of the Musée du Louvre?
